Keep every citation attached to its source
APA to AMA Citation Conversion for References and In-Text Citations
Work through a two-source APA draft, preserve its narrative attribution, and convert both the body citations and reference list to AMA.
An APA to AMA citation conversion requires changes to both the body citations and the reference list. Author-year citations become numbered superscripts, and the list follows first appearance. We checked APA’s citation guidance, Zotero’s plugin documentation, and the PubMed records behind the practice example below. Its three citation occurrences point to two papers. The repeated paper must keep the same number after conversion.
Separate plain text from active manager fields
Save a copy of the APA manuscript before changing its style. Then find out how its citations were inserted. A reference pasted from a website is ordinary text. A citation inserted through a reference manager can retain a connection to a library record. Those two starting points require different work.
For a connected Zotero document, the documented route is Document Preferences, where you select the intended AMA 11th edition style. Inspect the updated citations and bibliography. Refresh applies any changed library metadata. Keep the working copy connected while you revise; Unlink Citations removes the fields and prevents further automatic updates.
With plain text, changing a bibliography’s appearance leaves the author-year citations in the body untouched. You will need to identify each source, assign its number, and replace each citation occurrence. A mixed document needs particular care because its pasted citations will remain outside the manager’s updates.
Create a source map before conversion
Read the manuscript from its first citation and record each new source. Match the author and year to the complete reference, then verify an identifier such as a DOI or PMID. A surname and year alone can identify several different papers, so resolve any ambiguity before assigning a number.
Our original practice paragraph combines narrative attribution with a parenthetical citation and a repeated source. The sentences identify papers for formatting practice and make no claims about their findings. The records are Ioannidis’s 2005 article, PMID 16060722, and Halpern and colleagues’ 2002 paper, PMID 12140307.
| Original APA key | Checked DOI | Assigned AMA number | Occurrences in the paragraph |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ioannidis, 2005 | 10.1371/journal.pmed.0020124 | 1 | First and third |
| Halpern et al., 2002 | 10.1056/NEJMsb020632 | 2 | Second |
Original APA practice paragraph
Ioannidis (2005) supplies the first source for this formatting exercise. A second record concerns transplantation (Halpern et al., 2002). The closing sentence returns to the first source (Ioannidis, 2005).
Convert the manuscript and verify first appearances
Assign 1 to Ioannidis because that source appears first. Assign 2 when Halpern’s paper enters the paragraph. The closing citation points back to Ioannidis and therefore remains 1. The publication years do not control this sequence.
Keep the narrative author when the sentence needs that name. Here, Ioannidis remains the subject of the opening sentence, while the parenthetical citation year is replaced by its source number. A year that conveys historical timing in your own prose can remain. Review the sentence’s meaning before deleting it.
The converted paragraph uses superscripts beside the source attribution or statement. Sentence-ending numbers follow periods. The general AMA guidance places numbers outside periods and commas and inside colons and semicolons; check any house variation required by your journal.
Converted AMA practice paragraph
Ioannidis¹ supplies the first source for this formatting exercise. A second record concerns transplantation.² The closing sentence returns to the first source.¹
The three citation occurrences are 1, 2, 1. There are only two reference-list entries.
Convert APA to AMA references in the same order
The APA list below places Halpern before Ioannidis alphabetically. After conversion, Ioannidis must move to reference 1. Simply adding numbers to the alphabetical list would attach the opening sentence to the wrong paper.
The records also need the target reference format. In these AMA entries, initials lose their periods, the year moves after the journal, and the journal uses its abbreviated title. The PLOS Medicine record has an article identifier, e124, which stays an article identifier. Do not invent a page range for it.

Audit every citation against the original draft
Compare the two versions side by side. This example should still contain three citation occurrences linked to two unique identifiers. Check every superscript against the source map, then read the references in numerical order. Confirm that the first and third citations both reach the Ioannidis entry.
For a longer paper, include citations in tables, figure legends, and supplements according to the journal’s instructions. Check locators and narrative names separately. Resolve duplicate records by identity, and review linked corrections when evaluating the research you actually use.
If you move a paragraph earlier during revision, its first citation may change the entire numbering sequence. Refresh a connected document or rebuild the manual map, then inspect the exported submission copy. Search for leftover author-year citation patterns, while checking that any years retained as part of the prose still belong there.
What an APA to AMA citation converter can handle
AMA Cite can prepare individual references from checked identifiers or manually entered source information. It does not parse an APA reference list or convert an uploaded manuscript. You can use a verified DOI or PMID to rebuild an entry, then place it in your source map.
